Firefighters responding to calls about a strong, strange odor in a house in South Boston found a 5-year-old girl naked and filthy with feces in a home that was filled with rats, spider webs, trash, and bottles of urine - conditions so deplorable that the home was condemned, officials said. (By Milton J. Valencia, Globe Staff)
The strange odor was caused by an underground NStar cable that caught fire, elevating carbon monoxide levels. That led to the little girl and three adults - a 78-year-old woman, her 41-year-old daughter, and 42-year-old son, who all lived in the dwelling - being taken to Boston hospitals for treatment.
