Rescue From Mine Shaft 'Very Scary,' Man Says
Man Spent 2 Nights In Mine

SONORA, Calif. -- A man rescued from an abandoned gold mine after tumbling more than 100 feet and spending two nights at the bottom of the dark shaft said his experience was "the worst thing you can imagine" on Sunday.

Darvis Lee Jr., 34, was pulled from the mine shaft by a specialized crew from Los Angeles at about 6 a.m.

Crews lowered a rescue worker and a mesh basket into the chasm to get Lee out, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department said.

But as Lee walked out of the Sonora Regional Medical Center after being treated for wounds, he said his ordeal was "very scary."

"It's like, each time they (rescue workers) came down, they would dislodge enormous rocks that would fall on me," Lee said. "And I'd think, God, let this be the last one, then I'd fall 30 more feet."
