A Fort Carson soldier's account of a baby sitter's holding his infant son for ransom is bogus, said police, who now consider the man the main suspect in the abuse of his 8-month-old child.
Pfc. David Spicer told police July 24 that upon his return from duty at Fort Carson, a baby sitter armed with a knife demanded a ransom for his boy in a dark alley in the 1400 block of Pando Avenue.
There was no baby sitter or ransom demand, authorities say.
Instead, Army investigators are homing in on Spicer to determine if he was responsible for his child's apparent malnutrition and viral infection.
According to Whitlock, the boy's mother was deployed in Iraq when the incident was reported, and she is now back in the Springs.
