Law enforcement receives PTSD training

RIVERSIDE--The Riverside PD is on the front line helping law enforcement officers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to handle post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder was a focus in the latest course.

Police officers throughout the Inland Empire serve in the war zone.

The disorder can result in extreme and dangerous behavior. Sergeant Masson is pushing for enhanced training in PTSD.

“Or anything else to do with the returning warriors. We are going to be faced with some challenges in the future, just like we did in the early 80’s dealing with the Vietnam veterans,” he said.

He says the department wants to be ready to meet needs that are already surfacing.

If you know anything about NAMI, this is one of the things they have been pushing for, awareness and action, not just for the force returning from deployment as National Guardsmen and Reservists, but for the general public doing the same thing. It saves lives when they are aware of PTSD and what it means.
