Police responding to a disturbance call in Inglewood shot and killed an armed man at the front door of his apartment early this morning, authorities said.

Four officers arrived at the apartment complex in the 100 block of North Hillcrest Boulevard at about 12:30 a.m. and knocked on the door, which was opened by a man holding a gun, said Lt. Michael McBride of the Inglewood Police Department.

The man, identified by police as Kevin Wicks, 38, raised the gun toward the officers, McBride said, and one of them fired. The man was wounded and taken to a hospital, where he died.

  2. Thank you for the comment and the information.

There are a lot of departments across the country informing their officers about people in mental crisis but it's hard for them to be able to make a snap decision on what to do when they see a gun pointing at them. Education and awareness help but they still have to make these decisions on a daily basis. I do not fault them but I do feel sorry for them when they have to deal with their own healing. If they act too soon, a person could die when it was not necessary. If they act too slowly, they could die.
