Dr. Matthew J. Friedman to receive the VMW Excellence in Veterans Mental Health
Award!

Dr. Friedman will present the following seminar to our members and guests:

Seminar: "Post-War Integration: From Battlemind to PTSD", although most war
veterans will have a successful homecoming, all should be prepared for a few
bumps in the road, especially during the early going. A significant minority,
however, will experience problems that require professional attention, such as
PTSD. The seminar will review what can be done to promote normal reintegration
and what treatments are available for those with PTSD and other mental health
issues.

Matthew J. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D. is Executive Director of the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and
Professor of Psychiatry and of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Dartmouth Medical
School. He has worked with PTSD patients as both a clinician and researcher for
thirty-five years and has published extensively on stress and PTSD, biological
psychiatry, psychopharmacology, and clinical outcome studies on depression,
anxiety, schizophrenia, and chemical dependency. He has over 200 publications,
including seventeen books and monographs. Listed in "The Best Doctors in
America", he is a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric
Association, past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress
Studies (ISTSS), Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Anxiety Disorders
Association of America and has served on many VA, DoD and NIMH research,
education and policy committees. He is the recipient of many honors, including
the ISTSS Lifetime Achievement Award in

Executive Director’s Message
It is hard to believe that the National Center for PTSD has been in operation for over 15 years. The enthusiasm and vision with which our consortium began in 1989 have not only been sustained but have grown significantly. Our durable structure as a virtual center, the stability of our leadership, the creativity of our talented staff and the dynamism of our field have all fortified our collective dedication to our mission.

The experience of the past years has supported the notion "If you build it, they will come." As our annual reports attest, establishment of the National Center has fostered important, ambitious, exciting, and relevant collaborations with colleagues in VA as well as with scholars and clinicians from the National Institutes for Health. Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and major academic establishments, and the international community.

Over the years we have learned much during the past decade about what needs to be done and how to do it. It is our hope with this website that we will continue to provide accurate, empirically-driven, timely, and authoritative information on PTSD and the aftereffects of trauma for our wide constituency of interested audiences. Fortified by our collaborations, research, and clinical and consultation experience, we look forward to more effectively carrying out our congressionally mandated educational mission via this website.
