For killing a Marine over his gold chain, Jonathan Sanabria will spend the rest of his life in prison.
A jury Wednesday convicted
Sanabria, 21, on charges of attempted robbery and first-degree murder, said Assistant State Attorney Christopher Moody.
Miguel Angel Suarez, 25, who served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, was walking home from a Colombian Independence Day concert early July 21 when Sanabria attacked him.
Sanabria pistol-whipped Suarez, who fought back. Then Sanabria, who authorities said was a gang member, shot Suarez twice. One bullet hit Suarez in the head, killing him quickly, a medical examiner testified this week.
Suarez, a graduate of Jefferson High School, died a mile and a half from his childhood home. Sanabria confessed to detectives, saying he tried to rob Suarez for his gold chain.
