After completing two tours of duty in Iraq and two more in Afghanistan, Army Sgt. William Calhoun of Bakersfield finally came home in 2006. His mother Donna was overjoyed her son was home. But for William, he soon realized he felt differently being home.
"When I came home, I didn't want to do anything," said the 25-year-old Centennial High graduate.William didn't know it at the time, but he would later be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.
A new study by the Rand Corporation reveals 1 out of 5 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from PTSD or depression. But some who work with local veterans in Kern County say the figure is actually a lot higher."I believe that there's probably more like 3 out of 5, I really do," said Charles Robinson. Robinson is Programs Director with California Veterans Assistance Foundation.
The non-profit group helps veterans who are suffering from PTSD and other issues get back on their feet. It offers a two-year program.
