Penley first Fort Campbell soldier killed in more than a month

Fort Campbell has released additional information about a 101st soldier who died Sunday in Iraq.


Pfc. Shane D. Penley, a Sauk Village, Ill. native, died Sunday at Patrol Base Copper, Iraq, after suffering injuries while on duty at a guard post.

According to a news release from Fort Campbell, Penley entered the Army in June 2007 and came to Fort Campbell in October.

Penley was an infantryman assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

He is survived by his parents, David and Dena Penley, also of Sauk Village, Ill.

Penley's death remains under investigation, according to the Department of Defense.

Penley was the first 101st soldier to die in Iraq in more than a month, according to Fort Campbell's Web site.

Penley's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
