MCCOMB, Miss. — His friends and family say James Fayard was the kind of man who was compelled to help others, especially those in distress. That admirable quality cost him his life.

Robert Lanham, armed with a gun Wednesday, walked into Regions Bank in McComb where his ex-wife worked. Lanham fatally shot Fayard and bank manager Ronnie Larrimore, then took his ex-wife hostage and fled in a truck, McComb Police Chief Billie Hughes said.

Lanham and his ex-wife, Rachel J. Lanham, were later found dead.

“It wasn’t a bank robbery. It was a domestic situation,” McComb Police Chief Billie Hughes said.

  1. James Frederick Fayard gave his life saving a woman. He is direct descendant of Samuel McGehee, an American Revolutionary War Veteran and he is also part African-American. He is a Cajun Guardian Angel, Gentleman, and hero. His remains are cremated per his request. God bless him and his family.

  3. I served in the Navy with 'Big Jim' Fayard (USS R.S. Edwards DD-950) in Hawaii. He was one of the best people I ever met in the Navy. I found this article while trying to find Jim. It is very sad news for me but just reinforces what I knew of him in the short time we served together.

Fair winds and following seas, Jim.
