McCain targets message to vets
Charlie Cain / Detroit News Lansing Bureau
Sen. John McCain spent Monday courting the support of independent voters and military veterans he hopes will propel him to victory in today's Republican presidential primary.
"As the day goes on, I get more enthusiastic," he said Monday as he took his campaign to the North American International Auto Show and across western Michigan. "It's going to be a close vote, and we're working hard to get out our vote."
McCain was the upset winner in Michigan's 2000 GOP primary. Appeals for votes in his final push Monday often sounded like a pitch to Democrats, not his own base.
He preached about the dangers of global warming and greenhouse gases; talked about how he helped Michigan workers who have lost jobs in the global economy; and said he had no interest in tapping oil reserves in "pristine" places in Florida, Alaska, California and in the Grand Canyon of his native Arizona.
At every stop since he began his Michigan blitz on Saturday, McCain recognized the veterans in the audience. He's promised to provide better medical care to veterans in the early days of his administration.

When the Army came out with the study that redeploying the troops increased the risk of developing PTSD, McCain should have stood firm against doing this to them.
When the Army came out with the study that it was hurting the troops by not having adequate rest time between deployments, he should have stood firm against doing this to them. Instead he pushed for the surge of troops going into Iraq.
Since the invasion of Iraq, McCain has shown little of the "value" he places on his fellow veterans. Instead of targeting them for their votes and support, he should instead apologize to them for not putting them ahead of his loyalty to Bush.
The fact is there are less doctors and nurses in the DOD than there were during the Gulf War.
The fact is there are a lot more wounded surviving Iraq and Afghanistan with very serious wounds now then there were then.
The fact is they are dying when they come home long after their battles should have ended.
The fact is, McCain along with Bush have shown they value the troops they want the nation to support very little. Take a look at the death count rising again in Iraq and know the men and women in our military were the least of their concerns.
PTSD kills them everyday. TBI, medications, the list goes on and so does their talk but no one is really doing anything about any of this.
