Moving vets to new clinic may disrupt mental health routines

CUMBERLAND — The last time Richard Friend mobilized for a deployment, he was issued an olive green rucksack, a protective helmet and a firearm, and pointed toward South Vietnam.
Nearly 40 years later, Friend is equipping himself with nerves strong enough to fight a recent decision by Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic officials in Martinsburg, W.Va., to move local veterans’ mental health services to the Cumberland Outpatient Clinic.
Until recently, some 150 veterans in Maryland and West Virginia received mental health services at Re-Entry Associates on North Centre Street. Many are being treated for post traumatic stress disorder.
